Starigrad, also known as Starigrad – Paklenica, is located by the Velebit Canal, near the main road Rijeka – Split under the mountains of Southern Velebit. A small town, where the administration of the National Park Paklenica is located, is the starting point for visiting the canyons for Great and Small Paklenica. In Starigrad, where mild mediterranean and harsh mountain climate meet, is the center of the 20 km long Riviera Paklenica with its sandy beaches.

NATIONAL PARK PAKLENICA

National Park Paklenica is a miracle of nature with many beautiful characteristics such as steep cliffs of canyons, ancient beech forests, mysterious caves and a variety of plant and animal species. Paklenica is a natural phenomenon of the Southern Velebit with two canyons – Great and Small Paklenica. The gorge was named after the black pine resin, called Paklina, which was used for coating ships. The park is part of the famous Velebit with its length about 150 km.
Details about the trek:
Meeting point will be in Cerkno. From there we will drove through Ljubljana, past the capital of Croatia– Zagreb. We will continue towards the Starigrad, through the canyon of Small Paklenica, along the marked path to the bivouac of Ivina Vodica.
Early in the morning we will head towards the Bil hut (1657m). After short stop we will continue our trip by the lake Malovansko to Vaganski peak (1757 m). We will then pass the Baba’s peak (1723 m), where we will enjoy a beautiful view of the Baba’s lake. Our next stop will be at Marasovac, from where we will head to bivouac Struga. From this point the Ramića dvori, located above the canyon of Great Paklenica, is not far off.
From the Ramića dvori we continue our tour towards Logarnica and then to Manita furnace, where we will visit the underground cave. After the visit of the cave we will climb to the Anica’s Kuk (712 m). We will head back to the canyon, where we will see the famous climbing paths after which Paklenica is well known. This will be our last stop in national park before returning to the hotel. Follows free afternoon for viewing Starigrad.
Next morning we head back to Slovenia.
The route will take us mostly along marked trails. Trekking is not particularly difficult. You need standard mountaineering equipment, good physical condition and mental readiness.
